1954 Gibson EM-150 Mandolin, Sunburst - ex Martin Barre
A very special 1954 Gibson EM-150 Mandolin, finished in Sunburst and previously owned, played and toured by Martin Barre.
The EM-150 is a wonderfully characterful vintage Gibson electric mandolin. Finished in Sunburst, it has a great period look and sits in that very cool space between traditional mandolin design and early electric Gibson experimentation.
This example is offered on Martin’s behalf and comes with superb direct provenance. According to Martin, he used this mandolin on early Martin Barre solo albums and on Jethro Tull live shows in the early 2020s. It was also played on early Martin Barre Band tours across the UK, Europe and the USA over a number of years.
Martin also notes that this instrument features on his instrumental track “Martin’s Jig”, giving it a clear recorded connection as well as its touring history.
For practicality, Martin replaced the original tuners in order to preserve them, fitting more robust modern versions for regular use. The original tuners are included with the instrument as is the pickguard.
As a player, this is a charming and inspiring vintage Gibson with a lovely old-world feel and plenty of character. It has the added interest of being a genuine artist-owned and used instrument, with direct written provenance from Martin himself.
