1969 Martin D-28
A superb 1969 Martin D-28 offering all the classic dreadnought power and depth that has made the model such a benchmark acoustic.
The D-28 is one of Martin’s most iconic designs, pairing a spruce top with rosewood back and sides for a big, clear and harmonically rich voice. It has the familiar late-’60s Martin spec with Grover tuners and a black pickguard, Ebony bridge and fingerboard with a Rosewood bridge plate.
The guitar had a neck reset and refret back in 2015 by Dave King, and the geomertry of the instrument remains excellent with a saddle height of 3.5mm and an action at the 12th fret of 2.5mm on the bass side and 3mm on the treble.
The main condition point to note is a rim crack to the lower bout. Otherwise, it has the honest look and feel of a well-kept vintage dreadnought, with plenty of character.
The neck is comfortable and familiar, measuring 42.6mm at the nut, with a depth of 22.3mm at the 1st fret and 24.6mm at the 9th. It has a really comfortable soft V profile that sits very naturally in the hand.
Tonally, this is exactly the sort of thing you hope for from a good D-28: a clear top end, rich rosewood depth and plenty of projection. It has the authority for flatpicking and strumming, and it also responds well to a lighter touch and fingerstyle playing.
Overall a very good example that's had all of the important maintenance work done, ready for the new owner to enjoy for decades to come!
