2023 Fender Custom Shop '62 Stratocaster, Mystic Pine Green, Ex-Robben Ford
A very cool 2023 Fender Custom Shop ’62 Stratocaster Relic, finished in Mystic Pine Green and previously owned and customised by Robben Ford.
Built as a Custom Shop ’62 Strat Relic, this guitar started life with a period-inspired spec: 2-piece alder body, flat-lam AAA rosewood fingerboard, small headstock, 7.25” radius, 21 frets, 4-bolt neck construction, vintage-style hardware and chrome/nickel appointments. The Mystic Pine Green finish gives it a striking look, and the relic work is nicely judged throughout.
The guitar is made far more interesting by its Robben Ford provenance. It was owned and customised by Robben, and comes with a handwritten note from him. The neck has been reshaped and refretted, giving it a more personal, dialled-in feel than a standard Custom Shop example. Originally listed on the floor traveller as a ’62 Strat Style “C” neck with a 1.650” nut width, it now has the benefit of Robben’s own preferred feel and setup.
The control layout has also been modified, with the volume knob moved to the second position and the original guard position plugged. It is a practical player’s modification, particularly useful for anyone who finds the standard Strat volume control a little too close to the picking hand.
The guitar has since been fitted with Monty’s Robben Ford Signature Strat pickups. These are a perfect match for the guitar, delivering a classic early ’60s Strat voice with excellent clarity, snap and articulation, while also reflecting Robben’s own tonal preferences.
The hardware includes an American Vintage Strat bridge, vintage-style tuners with Fender logo, vintage-style white plastics, CRL 5-way switch and 250k pots. It comes with its Fender Custom Shop floor traveller and the original brown Custom Shop hard case.
A superb artist-owned Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster with genuine Robben Ford provenance, tasteful player-focused modifications and a great playing feel.
